About Auca Mahuida Provincial Park

Auca Mahuida Provincial Park

Auca Mahuida Provincial Park is situated in the northern region of Patagonia in Neuquén Province, Argentina. The park covers a landscape dominated by Patagonian steppe vegetation and marked by an extinct volcanic cone, the Auca Mahuida volcano, which reaches an elevation of 1,268 meters. This volcanic formation provides panoramic views of the surrounding plains and the nearby Buta Ranquil River valley. The park’s environment supports a variety of native flora including grasses, shrubs, and hardy trees adapted to the dry, windy conditions characteristic of Patagonia. It also offers habitat for diverse wildlife such as guanacos, ñandús (greater rheas), Patagonian hares, and a range of bird species including hawks and parrots. Historically, the area holds significance for indigenous peoples and later settlers involved in traditional ranching. Outdoor enthusiasts visit Auca Mahuida for hiking along trails that ascend the volcano, birdwatching, and exploring the steppe landscape. The park is not heavily developed, providing a wilderness experience with minimal infrastructure. Visitors can enjoy the solitude and open skies ideal for photography and stargazing. Its remote location and unique natural features make it a valuable destination for those interested in the rugged beauty of Patagonia’s interior.
